Core Revenue Bonds
Core municipal revenue bond structures covering pledged revenues, municipal revenue bonds, and special assessment bonds.
Municipal bond terms for project-backed repayment sources, pledged revenues, assessments, utilities, hospitals, housing, and industrial facilities.
Revenue and project-backed municipal bonds are municipal securities repaid from a defined revenue source, facility, assessment base, or enterprise system rather than from an unrestricted general tax pledge. The key credit question is whether the pledged revenues are strong enough, legally available, and timely enough to pay debt service.
Use this branch when the bond is tied to tolls, utility charges, hospital system revenues, housing project income, industrial project payments, public-housing authority revenues, or special assessments. If the credit rests on broad taxing power, start with General Obligation Bond instead.
| Revenue source | Better starting point | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Broad project or enterprise cash flow | Revenue Bond | Pledged revenue, debt-service coverage, covenants, reserve funds, and call features. |
| Municipal system or public authority revenue | Municipal Revenue Bond | Issuer, obligor, rate-setting power, continuing disclosure, and official statement. |
| Benefited property assessments | Special Assessment Bond | Assessment roll, lien priority, collection history, property concentration, and foreclosure remedies. |
| Hospitals, housing, utilities, or industrial facilities | Sector and Authority Revenue Bonds | Demand, regulation, operating margins, reimbursement or tenant risk, and project economics. |
A revenue label is not enough for an investment conclusion. SEC and MSRB investor materials emphasize reviewing repayment sources, official statements, continuing disclosures, trading history, and pricing data rather than relying only on shorthand labels such as “revenue bond.”
