Market equity is usually share price multiplied by diluted or basic shares under the stated convention. If potential dilution is material, the model should reconcile options, warrants, and convertibles rather than silently mixing a basic share count with a diluted debt assumption.

A higher ratio generally indicates that debt supplies more of the defined capital base. This can increase fixed payments, refinancing exposure, and sensitivity of equity returns. The economic effect depends on:
There is no universal “good” ratio. A regulated utility and an early-stage technology company can support different financing mixes, and peers can still differ in coverage and maturity risk.
The ratio is not constrained mechanically between 0% and 100% in every accounting situation. If book equity is negative, debt plus equity can be smaller than debt, zero, or negative. The result can exceed 100%, be undefined, or become negative.
For example, debt of $4 million and equity of negative $1 million produces (4/(4-1)=133.3%). The arithmetic is valid, but the usual “percentage of capital” interpretation is strained. Report the negative equity and use coverage, liquidity, and asset analysis rather than relying on the ratio alone.
